Pricing Work: An article from StudioNotes: the journal for working artists

Pricing Your ArtWork An article at ArtAdvice.com
"Pretend a collector walks into your studio and sees a piece they like. They offer you $5 for it. Would you be willing to let them take it home for that price? Probably not. What if they offered you $5000 for it? Feeling pretty good about that? Okay, somewhere between $5 and $5000 there is going to be a price that makes you feel like you can let that piece go. You may not be totally happy about it, you may feel the piece is worth more, but it is the lowest possible price you can live with. Now, double it...." [read more]

Dr. Art on Donating Your Work to Charity Article on NYFA Interactive
Excerpt: "Can an artist deduct the fair market value of a work they donate to charity? "No," says Ms. Rosen. According to existing tax laws: "BLOOD, SWEAT, and TEARS are not deductible. Most artwork that an artist still has in her or his possession carries what is called a ‘zero cost basis,’ meaning that the materials used to produce the work should have been taken as a tax deduction in the year they were purchased." What this means is that in the eyes of the IRS your donated artwork is worth nothing more than the sum of its parts, i.e., the total cost of the materials that went into making it.
