HISTORY OF PRINTING To Top

Houston, Texas, Museum of Printing History features printmaking workshops, a papermaking shop, and a book bindery operated and maintained by resident artists, volunteers and visiting artists.

The American Printing History Association
was founded in 1974 to encourage the study of printing history and its related arts and skills, including calligraphy, typefounding, typography, papermaking, bookbinding, illustration, and publishing. APHA is especially, but by no means exclusively, interested in American printing history.

Color Printing in the Nineteenth Century
An Exhibition at the Hugh M. Morris Library
University of Delaware Library Newark, Delaware

The nineteenth century was the turning point for technical development in color illustration. At the beginning of the century, books with color plates were hand-colored by the artist, using techniques dating back to the Renaissance. A hundred years later, the photo-reproductive techniques and the steam-driven printing press took printing out of the hands of the artist and introduced processes which would be used until the computer revolution of our day. Color Printing in the Nineteenth Century documents these changes in color printing technology by displaying some of the finest examples of books illustrated in color, published from the last quarter of the eighteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century.

PNEAC: Printers' National Environmental Assistance CenterPrinting Overview:
Prepress, Printing Process, Post-press & Finishing ....

Flexography is the major process used to print packaging materials

Gravure printing is characteristically used for long run, high quality printing producing a sharp, fine image.

Letterpress is the oldest method of printing with equipment and images printed by the "Relief" type printing plates

Lithographic printing is well suited for printing both text and illustrations in short to medium length runs of up to 1,000,000 impressions.

The various plateless printing processes are quite different from the five major conventional printing processes

Screen printing is arguably the most versatile of all printing processes. It can be used to print on a wide variety of substrates,

the most commonly used printing process

TIP: Color Printing Prices
Full color printing can be expensive however there are ways to keep the prices down such as opting for fewer colors, printing in color only on one side or ordering in bulk.

Giclees
one of the finest
reproduction methods
available today. Giclée is
a French word meaning spraying of ink. The prints are printed using dye base or pigment based inks on archival papers.

Serigraphy is a term
describing the silkscreen
process when used for fine art

Waterless Printing
an offset lithographic printing
process that eliminates the water
or dampening system used in
conventional printing
Serigraphy is a fine art,
color stencil printmaking process
in which special paint is forced through
a fine screen onto the paper beneath

Etching Processes ....

In general, there are two classes of etching processes:
Wet etching where the material is dissolved when immersed in a chemical solution
Dry etching where the material is sputtered or dissolved using reactive ions or a vapor phase etchant

Wet Etching is a blanket name that covers the removal of material by immersing the wafer in a liquid bath of the chemical etchant. Wet etchants fall into two broad categories; isotropic etchants and anisotropic etchants.

Dry Etching The most common form of dry etching for micromachining applications is reactive ion etching (RIE).

Giclee Print Net
Advantages: Giclée prints are advantageous to artists who do not find it feasible to mass produce their work, but want to reproduce their art as needed, or on-demand. Once an image is digitally archived, additional reproductions can be made with minimal effort and reasonable cost. The prohibitive up-front cost of mass production for an edition is eliminated. Archived files will not deteriorate in quality as negatives and film inherently do. Another tremendous advantage of giclee printing is that digital images can be reproduced to almost any size and onto various media, giving the artist the ability to customize prints for a specific client. [What is a Giclee Print]

Quality : The quality of the giclée print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.

The Giclée Print Net facility covers over 13,000 square feet of real estate and handles all things digital for clients from Colorado to Russia, New York to Paris, and all points in between.
